Addiction Resources for Christians

Addiction doesn’t discriminate — it can affect anyone, including people of deep faith. However, for many people — regardless of their previous beliefs — faith becomes a powerful part of the healing process. If you or someone you love is struggling with substance use, Christian rehab centers and other faith-based recovery programs can offer clinical support and spiritual guidance.

In this guide, you’ll find information on Christian rehab options and where to turn for help rooted in compassion, belief and evidence-based best practices.

Understanding Substance Abuse Addiction Needs for Christians

In some Christian communities, addiction can be overlooked or misunderstood. It’s sometimes assumed that regular church attendance or a strong belief in the Bible should make someone immune to substance abuse. But the truth is, faith doesn’t eliminate the possibility of substance abuse or addiction. In fact, between 20% and 40% of teenagers who report being active in church also reported risky behavior related to alcohol and drug abuse.

Christians navigating substance use may benefit from care that meets spiritual and practical needs. This can include:

  • Programs that incorporate Scripture and prayer
  • Support that respects Biblical values
  • A safe space to talk about guilt and shame while being pointed to the power and forgiveness of the cross
  • Connection to a fellowship of believers who also understand the recovery journey and the struggles within it

Christian Rehab Centers

Christian drug rehab and recovery programs may be offered by churches and mission organizations in your area. If you’re interested specifically in faith-based rehab options, you might reach out to your local church or pastor. Many times, church staff are able to refer you to Christian counselors and other professionals.

We’ve also gathered some faith-based recovery programs and highlighted them below. Some of these programs operate within a specific town or state, but several of them offer services throughout the country.

Adult & Teen Challenge

This provider has hundreds of locations and offers Christ-centered addiction recovery. Its programs include options for teenagers and adults, and it incorporates life skills training and discipleship into the recovery walk. You can use the Adult & Teen Challenge program finder to discover locations near you.

The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Centers

The Salvation Army offers a number of adult rehab centers across the country. These free faith-based programs focus on physical, emotional and spiritual wellness and include residential options. Rehab treatment options offered under the Salvation Army banner include:

  • Adult Rehabilitation Centers. This no-cost residential work-therapy option is available for those who meet requirements, which include being age 21 to 65, being able to pass a Breathalyzer and drug test upon arrival, being able to work an 8-hour shift and participating in counseling and other program activities.
  • Harbor Light Center programs. Harbor Light locations offer intensive rehab units, intensive outpatient programs and other options for substance abuse treatment.
  • Outpatient treatment options. Some locations may offer outpatient treatment groups or host support groups.

Men of Nehemiah

This program in Dallas, TX, offers treatment for men who are dealing with substance abuse disorders and want to seek a healthier sober lifestyle. The program creates a sense of community among men who go through it at the same time and supports discipline and sobriety via camaraderie, Scripture and evidence-based approaches.

Faith Farm Ministries

With several programs in Florida, this organization offers faith-based recovery programs for women and men. The Boynton Beach location is on 90 acres and provides housing for up to 140 men in recovery at a time. The amenities include a dining hall, a church and classrooms.

The organization also operates an urban model and a location on a 1,500-acre farm. The farm location includes Comprehensive Work Training as part of the recovery program.

Other Substance Abuse Treatment Resources for People of Faith

If you’re looking for Christian recovery resources that aren’t inpatient or residential programs, you also have options.

  • Celebrate Recovery
Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-centered 12-step program that addresses issues such as substance abuse, trauma and unhealthy relationship patterns. Meetings are typically hosted by churches and offer a welcoming space to explore healing through Scripture, community and accountability. It’s a great option for those looking for ongoing support in a faith-based setting. You can also connect via Zoom if there isn’t a Celebrate Recovery location in your area.
  • Pastoral and Church-Based Counseling
You can often find free counseling at a local church. Some larger churches have pastoral or licensed counselors on staff. Even at smaller churches, pastoral staff may be able to recommend someone local. Churches typically refer you to Christian counselors who understand the importance of integrating faith into recovery. Church services or referrals often result in low-cost or donation-based models, so they’re accessible to those who need support but don’t have insurance coverage or the ability to travel to a rehab center.
  • Local Church Support Groups
Some congregations host support groups specifically for those struggling with addiction or for loved ones walking through recovery with a friend or family member. These groups often combine prayer, testimony and encouragement, creating a powerful sense of fellowship.

Christian Hotlines and Helplines

Hotlines like the National Rehab Hotline are available 24-7 to help people in crisis find treatment, including Christian rehab centers and other faith-based programs. Operators can offer immediate support and connect you with local or national resources that align with your spiritual and recovery needs.
