As of 2023, approximately 1.8 million residents of Michigan struggle with some mental health issues, including anxiety and depression, and less than half receive adequate treatment. For most, lack of funds and insurance was the most common reason for lack of care. Untreated mental health conditions can lead to an increase in unemployment and disability claims, substance abuse, imprisonment, suicide and homelessness. Untreated mental illness costs the United States approximately a billion dollars each year. In addition to the lack of funds, the lack of health care providers prevents many individuals from receiving adequate Michigan mental health treatment.
